|Students test physic knowledge with bridge challenge|

Students in Erin Mulanax's Advanced Placement®/College Credit Physics I classes enjoyed making a noisy mess while destroying bridges they designed. But first, they had to put their physics brains to the test.
As part of this lab challenge, students had to build the lightest bridge possible that could hold the most weight - using only 200 craft sticks. The highest ratio of load weight to bridge mass "won." To build a strong but lightweight bridge, students needed to apply what they learned in physics about forces, simple harmonic motion, torques, fatigue and elasticity. The bridge that held the most weight (527 pounds) was built by Aaron Clark, Ethan Holtgrieve and Jordan Stevens and weighed 1.1 pounds. But the winning bridge was built by Kevin Bowers, Hoang Cam and Simar Gandhi. It held 350 pounds but only weighed 0.44 pounds, earning it a better ratio.
