|Wednesday, July 26, 2017|
The Pattonville High School varsity cheerleading team qualified to compete at state after taking first place in a zero-deduction routine at a regional competition sponsored by the Missouri Cheerleading Coaches Association (MCCA). The junior varsity (J.V.) team also placed fifth in the competition held July 19 at St. Francis Borgia High School in Washington. In addition, 11 members of the varsity team were named to the National Cheerleading Association (NCA) All-American Team after being nominated by NCA instructors during the state cheerleading camp at Mizzou.
About 35 percent of cheerleaders participating in the camp are nominated to try out for the team. In order to be selected, the cheerleaders had to perfectly execute a cheer they learned at the beginning of camp, do tumbling or stunting and perform a combination of three consecutive jumps. The All-American recognition allows cheerleader athletes to travel all over the world and participate in parades. Pattonville varsity cheerleaders who will be going to state and who were selected for the All-American Team are: Alexus Blount, Sallie Crosby, Kori Gibbons, Makayla Harden, Quincie Howard, Megan Lashley, Hannah Rodgers, Shaylyn Scheer, Sofia Serra, Kennedy Stroker and Kathryn Wentz. Skylar Monnig was also nominated for the All-American team and will be going to state. Kesley Kobielusz and Peyton Smith are also members of the award-winning team and will be going to state. In addition, Gibbons, Lashley and Stroker were the only cheerleaders out of the camp to receive applications to become NCA instructors next fall. Kalli Hunt is head coach, and Amy Tran is assistant coach for the varsity team.
Members of the JV team that placed at the regional competition were: Samantha Bannister, Lauryn Berry, Maddie Branson, Valeri Felix, Haley Harrison, Tymani Jones, Chloe Mahrt, McKenzie Massey, Nicole McDaniel, Mi Joi Swaby, Brianna Voss and Mackenzie Voss. They were coached by Hunt with Tran and Sam Markowski as assistant coaches.
